Monday, October 9th, 2006

Bethlehem Soccer Club’s U-14 “Blue Steel” Boys team won its second consecutive Whitewater Cup Classic soccer tournament in Hazleton over the Columbus Day weekend. The team garnered its first Cup last Memorial Day at the U-13 level.

In their opening match, BSC defeated the Ridley Park, PA Riverdawgs 1-0. BSC keeper Ethan Arner made a spectacular save with :01 left at the end of the first half to keep the game knotted at 0-0. In the second half, Alex Zappas slipped the lone goal past the Riverdawgs’ keeper to give BSC the win, 1-0.

BSC fell behind early in their second game against the Reading, PA Fire, 1-0. But BSC’s Mike Kokosky knotted the game at 1-1, scoring on a direct kick from 18 yards. In the second half, BSC midfielder Andreas Haller took a feed from Andrew Lomas and buried the game winner to propel BSC into the title game, 2-1.

In the championship game, BSC jumped out to an early 2-0 first half lead against the Nazareth, PA Arsenal. BSC continued to roll in the second half with three more goals, winning the Cup with a 5-1 victory. Ben Miller had two goals and Erik Alderiso, Mike Kokosky and Tim Hoglund each added single tallies.

BSC keeper Ethan Arner was stellar throughout the tournament, stifling repeated threats by Blue Steel opponents.
